Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, Ahmed Patel, Alpesh Thakor and other top leaders are in Gujarat for a meeting of its Congress Working Committee CWC 2019.
Hardik Patel is an effective leader in the farmer belt who can target the policies of the Narendra Modi government. He also retains a great capacity to attract crowds in Gujarat, which no other Congressman has been able to do in the state. All put together, it will not be as easy a ride for Hardik Patel in politics as it was for him during the Patidar agitation phase.
Alpesh Thakor was said to be negotiating with BJP chief Amit Shah for a berth in the Gujarat ministry. He was upset that the Congress did not give him importance after the state polls. It is understood that in his talks with Shah, Thakor insisted on a key portfolio, either the public works department or cooperatives.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the decision of the Patidar leader joining Congress was a "design" by the party. "We have been saying this, and now it has been proved that Hardik Patel is a design of Congress party. His agitation was at the behest of the Congress. He has cheated his community, misled youth.
Priyanka Gandhi says "This nation is based on love and brotherhood. It is sad at what is happening in the country these days. There is no bigger patriotism than awareness. Your awareness is a weapon; your vote is a weapon. It is a weapon that will not hurt or harm anyone. It is a weapon that will strengthen you".
Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who also addressed the meeting, highlighted the agrarian crisis, slow industrial growth and unemployment under the present regime at the Centre.
Sonia Gandhi alleged that the Prime Minister is playing the "victim card" but it is the people of the country who are the victims of his "wrong policies".
The CWC meeting was held in Gujarat after a gap of 58 years. It was also held to commemorate the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi beginning a new chapter in India's Independence struggle by launching the 'Salt Satyagraha' to Dandi on March 12, 1930.
