Grumpy Cat Dies, Internet Celebrity With a Piercing Look of Contempt, Famous feline with the perpetually miserable mug was 7. Her Spirit Will Live On, Family Says died this week due to complications with a urinary tract infection. She was just over seven years old. Grumpy Cat, an internet celebrity because of her upset facial expression, died from complications that arose from a urinary tract infection. The furry sensation's family announced her death on Twitter on Friday.
Born in 2012, Grumpy Cat became a darling of memes, cat fanciers and anyone who needed to be reminded that somewhere out there, there was a cat who looked as grumpy as they felt. Grumpy Cat quickly became a meme, with image macros posted on top of the viral photo playing off her remarkably displeased look. Her owners say her perpetual frown and small size are due to feline dwarfism.
“Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world even when times were tough,” according to the post. Grumpy Cat, real name Tardar Sauce, had feline dwarfism. This, her owners said, probably accounted for her distinctive facial features and small size. Grumpy Cat wasn’t, in fact, perpetually grumpy; her distinctive scowl was caused by a form of dwarfism.
The famous mixed-breed feline died "peacefully" in the arms of her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, the statement said. In past interviews, Bundesen described her famous cat as actually the opposite of grumpy: "She's very sweet and docile." Wider fame followed, with fans rushing to buy calendars and posters. Grumpy Cat made appearances on TV and at baseball games. The internet will always have famous cats, but few will attain the status that Grumpy Cat did. Many cats have had moments of mini-fame on the internet, but few, if any, have had the reach and staying power of Grumpy Cat.
