Sports Direct billionaire Ashley, 54, met Benitez, 59, in London at the end of the season but talks over a new deal broke down and the inevitable separation was confirmed this afternoon. TV personalities Ant and Dec have called for Mike Ashley to sell Newcastle United following the announcement that Rafa Benitez is to leave as manager.
Benitez and his whole backroom staff will depart on June 30, with Newcastle now beginning their search for a new boss, leaving fans and legend Alan Shearer exasperated. “We have worked hard to extend Rafa's contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been - and will not be - possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.
A Toon statement read: “It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019. Ant and Dec, who are boyhood Newcastle fans and are often seen at games, took to social media to voice their anger at the situation, labeling the news of Benitez's exit as 'disastrous.'
The statement was met with huge amounts of anger from the Magpies' faithful, who directed their rage towards owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley. One fan tweeted: "Absolute disgrace, Mike Ashley has belittled this club again over his own personal agenda. ‘According to Egyptian sources, everything hung on the fact that Newcastle were not keen to pay £500,000 for the year-long loan. And so, Salah would stay in Egypt.’
